The Sal Backwaters is an ecosystem of its own, home to Birds of paradise both migratory and residents, fishes ranging from small to large sizes, water-dwelling mammals, reptiles, mangroves, lotuses, and many more.
Goa is the smallest state of India occupying a small part of Western Ghats. Goa’s Western Ghats are extremely rich in terms of Biodiversity and are soon to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is home to more than 500 species of birds, 250 species of butterflies, reptiles mammals, and more. When rowing through the backwaters you will get up close and get to experience the western ghats on the waters in its raw state untouched and wild.
The Sal Backwaters is home as well as a holiday home to a lot of birds like King Fisher, Oriental Darter, Kites, Purple Moorhens, peacocks as well migratory birds like Black-headed Ibis, Greater/lesser adjutant storks, Siberian cranes, etc. The entire length of river Sal is covered with mangroves and other trees like mangoes, cashew trees, and coconuts, not to forget the beautiful red and white lotuses that bloom every morning. Animals such as otters, non-venomous snakes, monitor lizards are some rare sightings that will leave you lost for words.
Most of them out there know Goa as a place for beaches, nightlife maybe churches and temples even. But how many know about the diverse unexplored paradise we call the backwaters and kayaking on them up close?
Chaitanya Kamat, the founder of Aqua Trails Goa has lived 25 years of his life a couple of kilometers away from this hidden gem of Sal Backwaters and yet had no idea of its existence. As they say, you have to wonder where “footprints are scarce” sometimes even get lost to find such pristine undisturbed natural beauty. He has been kayaking in these waters for the past 5 years and yet every day on these waters is a new adventure a new experience. Migratory birds, otters, a sea full of lotuses, coconut trees standing tall, and mangroves shying on the waters as they gaze upon their undisturbed majestic reflections on the water it's not only a treat for the eyes but also a kind of therapy for the mind.
